Tanning Leather

Over 7,000 years ago, the first method of curing skins was to pound grease into the hides.

About 400 BC the ancient Egyptians discovered that the extract of bark and wood from certain trees contained tannic acids, which worked better than pounding grease into the hides.

Mineral leather tanning was discovered around 2000 years ago. Tanning with tannic acid could take months to complete.

Chromium sulphate or aluminium sulphate can be used for tanning leather hides within 24 hours.
